Chapter 10
Itâs early, and Iâm not ready to face Scott yet.
I stop at a local bar I frequent on the way home, usually accompanied by Scott or work friends.
I just need some time to think.
And a drink.
Badly.
âHey, DeRosa! Rough day?â says the bartender, Henry.
âYou have no idea,â I say.
âThe usual?â
âYes, pleaseâand a shot of somethingâthanks, Henry.â
âA shot? Wow. Must be a really rough day. You donât do that stuff.â
I do now, I think.
âHere you go,â he says.
I grab the cold beer in front of me and take a long sip.
I brush back my auburn hair and pull my glasses off to rub my tired eyes.
Ten years on the job and Iâve got what to show for it?
A boss with no balls and even less integrity will do that to you, DeRosa.
Iâve got more balls than any man I know.
Maybe Ainsley was on to something, I think. As soon as that thought crosses my mind, I laugh.
I pick up the shot.
Hereâs to you, Ainsley. Wish we could have hunted âem down together!
I take another sip of beer and laugh some more.
âHey, honey, whatâs so funny over there?â a man in a wrinkled suit down the bar asks.
âExcuse me? Are you talking to me?â I say.
His eyes travel down to my legs, which are crossed under my skirt.
âYou better believe it,â he slurs.
Let me guess, you sad, drunk man. You're still out from a martini lunch and will probably sexually harass your poor secretary when you get back.
This guy reminds me of Daniel, Ainsleyâs bastard, hedge fund ex-husband twenty years from now. Doesnât he?
Yes, yes, he does, Lila.
âWell, sir, thatâs really none of your business,â I say, smiling.
âYou okay over there, Lila?â Henry asks meaningfully.
âYeah, Iâm fine. Just fine,â I say.
âHey, Henry, Iâm jush beinâ friendly. Right, honey?â the drunk man says.
âSure,â I say, smiling mysteriously.
I know! Iâve got it. Iâll write a book, I think.
Iâve got money saved. I can sell this one easily!
I smile widely to myself.
âAnother beer, Henry. Iâve got something to celebrate over here,â I say.
âAll right! You and Scott finally get engaged?â he says.
âNah, nah, something better than that,â I say, without thinking.
But, there is still Scott to think of...
Before I can sell it to anyone else, Iâve got to sell it to him.
